The Thin Man (1934) is the film adaption of a novel by Dashiell Hammett. I haven't read the book (shame, I know) but absolutely love the film. It's hard not to:
- It is a pre-code film so true to life activities like drunken parties weren't prohibited
- There is a very expressive dog for comedic effect
- The main character couple are full of sarcasm and teasing, and have amazing screen chemistry
- There is some lovely decor and fashion
I caught that the entire film series is available for streaming on HBO Max again, so I put the first film on and was inspired to write a post about it. The story is about a former detective who's just returned to New York from California, and is pulled into solving the murder of a former client. William Powell plays Nick Charles and Myrna Loy plays his wife, Nora Charles. They are both so great in their roles, and especially Myrna. I just love them together so much.
The film does have some twists regarding who committed the murder. I really had no idea who it was the first time I watched it, and that is pretty good for a nearly 90 year old film. It never gets old.
